An open source server for Virtual Magic Kingdom
Disney's Virtual Magic Kingdom ran from 2005 to 2008. When the servers went dark, the game survived only in fragments: archived client files, screenshots, and memories. OpenVMK is building a server that speaks the original client's protocol, so the Kingdom can be preserved, studied, and run by anyone.
Faithful
OpenVMK runs the original VMK client, not a remake. Rooms, furni, clothing and games come straight from preserved game files, and the server is rebuilt message by message from what that client expects.
No plugin needed
VMK's own Lingo scripts, from the core plus all 40 game casts, are ported to TypeScript and run in a modern browser on a Lingo runtime. It's the same game logic, without Shockwave.
Self-hostable & documented
The server is TypeScript on Node.js with SQLite, and runs on pretty much any machine. Every protocol message, room and asset is written down as it's worked out.
Where things stand
| Done | Sign-in, avatar creation, the navigator, public and guest rooms, chat, emotes, friends and messenger. |
| Done | Shops and credits, furni and posters, trading, pins, magic, FastPasses, the camera and photo album, plus a staff admin panel. |
| Now | Mini games: Fireworks, Jungle Cruise and the Music Mixer are in, with Pirates and Haunted Mansion underway. |
| Now | The TypeScript browser port of the original client. |
| Then | Quests, Docker packaging, and the first public release. |
Want to help?
Code contributions open up with the first release, but there's plenty to do right now:
- FilesArchived VMK client files and casts, especially rare ones
- NotesPacket captures, protocol notes and old screenshots
- TestTesting builds and reporting bugs
